BOAT
CARE & REPAIR
GENERAL BOAT CARE
- A good fresh water rinse is always a good idea, especially
after paddling in salt water. Make sure to remove any sand or
grit from moving parts.
- Treating the boat with a good UV protectant will prolong the
life of your kayak or canoe. 303 Protectant works great and can
be used on cars as well.
- Composite (fiberglass and kevlar) boats will benefit from waxing.
Use a good quality car wax.
STORING YOUR BOAT
- When possible store your boat inside away from the
elements.
- When storing your boat outside be sure to place it in a safe
spot where it won't get hurt by things like falling tree branches!
Store the boat upside down to prevent it from filling with water.
- If you are hanging your boat never hang from the grab handles.
- When supporting the boat with saw horses give your boat a little
extra kindness by adding some padding.
CARING FOR WOOD
- Wood paddles that are not varnished will last longer
and look better if oiled on a regular basis. Use a penetrating
oil like Watco.
- Wood paddles that are varnished but where the varnish has worn
away require a light sanding and revarnishing.
- Wood gunwales require regular oiling especially if stored outside.
Lightly sand and treat with Watco oil.
WOOD GUNWALES &
ROYALEX
- Sometimes Royalex and wood just don't mix. They are
different materials and shrink at different rates. If you own
a Royalex canoe with wood gunwales you need to provide a little
bit of extra care in the cold months. Before putting your canoe
away for the winter make sure to loosen the screws holding the
inner gunwales to the boat several turns. This allows the Royalex
to shrink without cracking. Also screws holding the decks should
be taken out completely and decks removed.
